Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common refractive error that typically develops during childhood. People with myopia can see objects nearby very clearly, but have trouble seeing distant-range objects. Read on as your trusted eye doctor from Progressive Eyecare explains what causes myopia and discusses the treatment options:
A recent study discovered that a specific retinal cell, known as the “ON Delayed” cell, may be responsible for triggering the eye to grow longer than normal, which is what causes myopia. The research also showed that children who spend more time indoors may be at a higher risk of developing myopia. Indoor light emits increased red-green contrast, stimulating the retinal photoreceptors to grow beyond their normal patterns, elongating your eyes. This cell responds slowly to bright lights as well, causing problems with the normal light focusing and bending processes. This is just one more reason to encourage your children to spend more time playing outdoors!
Eyeglasses and contact lenses are reliable vision correction options to improve your distant vision while maintaining your near-range eyesight. We will perform a test to measure your refractive error so we can prescribe the appropriate lens type and power for your needs.
We may prescribe atropine eye drops or ointment to dilate your pupils, temporarily halting your eyes’ focusing and accommodation processes. This offers immediate, yet short-term effects to improve your far-range vision.
